My Daughter Won’t Be Staying With Her Dad — I’m Truly Worried About Her Safety

My ex and I share custody of our daughter, and since he usually handles pick-ups and drop-offs, I had never actually been inside his new home. I trusted that as long as our daughter seemed happy, everything was fine.
Last week, I went over unexpectedly to drop off a school project she forgot.
The moment I walked past her bedroom, my stomach dropped.
The door was wide open, and the room was completely unrecognizable. There were boxes stacked against the walls, random clothes everywhere, and belongings that clearly belonged to an adult stranger.
It didn’t look like a child’s bedroom anymore.
It looked rented out.
When I confronted my ex, he casually admitted he had rented our daughter’s room to someone else “for extra income.” Then he shrugged and said she was “fine sleeping on the couch.”
Fine?
A couch is not a home.
A child deserves a space that belongs to them — somewhere safe to sleep, keep their things, and feel secure. What hurt me most wasn’t even the room itself. It was how little concern he showed while talking about it.
As if our daughter’s comfort and stability were negotiable.
I left furious.
Now she’s staying with me full-time until he can prove she actually has a proper room again. And honestly? She’s happier here.
I still can’t believe he thought replacing his daughter’s bedroom with a paying tenant was acceptable parenting.
