The Text Message That Changed Everything

There was still no reply.
A few seconds later, his phone buzzed.
His wife finally answered:
“Really? A new car? That’s the sweetest thing you’ve ever said to me!”
The husband couldn’t help but smile. Then he sent one last message.
“Good. I knew you’d read this one. By the way, I’m still wearing my dirty clothes, and dinner can be whatever you feel like making.”
A minute later, she called him.
“So… there isn’t a raise?”
He laughed nervously. “No.”
“And there isn’t a new car?”
“Not exactly.”
There was silence on the line.
Then she burst out laughing.
“You are unbelievable! You couldn’t get me to answer the first message, so you baited me with a car?”
“Guilty,” he admitted.
She replied, “Well, congratulations. It worked.”
When he got home later that night, the laundry basket was exactly where he’d left it, still overflowing.
On the kitchen table sat two plates of simple pasta and a handwritten note:
“No new car. No magical salary raise. No freshly washed clothes.”
Then, underneath, she’d added:
“But there’s still a wife who loves you enough to wait up for you. Next time, just ask nicely instead of trying psychological tricks.”
He laughed, hugged her tightly, and apologized.
The next morning, they washed the clothes together, cooked breakfast side by side, and joked about the “imaginary car” for years afterward.
Sometimes the best lesson in a marriage isn’t about getting what you want—it’s about learning how to ask with honesty and love.
