My ex-husband called one evening and asked me to pause his child-support payments for four months.
“My wife needs a new car,” he explained. “You earn enough. You don’t really need the money anyway.”
I couldn’t believe his audacity. The payments covered our son’s food, clothes, school supplies, and medical expenses. They weren’t extra spending money for me.
Still, I calmly said, “Fine. I understand.”
He sounded delighted, believing I had agreed.
The following week, I drove our son to his father’s house for the weekend. Before leaving, I handed my ex a sealed envelope.
“Since you won’t be paying,” I said, “I’ll take care of this another way.”
Inside was a formal request to modify our custody arrangement. If he genuinely couldn’t afford basic support, I argued that our son should remain primarily with me until his finances improved.
There was also documentation of his recent luxury vacation, expensive electronics, and the deposit he had already paid toward his wife’s new car.
His face went pale.
“You tricked me!” he shouted.
“No,” I replied. “You admitted that buying her a car mattered more than supporting your child.”
He called his lawyer immediately. Two days later, every missed payment arrived in my account, along with a message saying there had been a “misunderstanding.”
There hadn’t been.
He simply learned that child support was his responsibility—not a favor he could pause whenever something more exciting came along.
