I Overheard My Mother Begging My Fiancé to Cancel Our Wedding

A few days before my wedding, Luke and I went to my parents’ house for dinner and to finalize the last details.
Everything seemed normal until Mom asked me to bring up a bottle of wine from the basement. Halfway down the stairs, I realized I hadn’t asked whether she wanted red or white.
As I returned, I heard her speaking quietly to Luke.
“Cancel the wedding before it’s too late,” she whispered. “You should never marry her.”
I stopped cold.
Then Luke asked, “Does she know the truth?”
My hands began shaking.
Mom revealed that years earlier, during a difficult period in my life, I had been diagnosed with a hereditary heart condition. My parents had hidden the full seriousness from me because I was young and terrified. Recently, Luke had learned that pregnancy could put my life at severe risk.
Mom believed he wanted children and would eventually pressure me into taking that chance.
I stepped into the room, furious that both of them had discussed my future without me.
Luke immediately apologized. He said he had never planned to leave. He had secretly scheduled an appointment with a specialist so we could understand every option together.
Mom had assumed the worst.
The wedding continued, but only after I made one thing clear: decisions about my health and marriage belonged to me.
Love may come from a place of fear, but secrecy can still feel like betrayal.
