A 911 operator answered a call and heard the nervous voice of a young boy.
“My name is Ryan,” he whispered. “Could you please help me with math?”
The operator gently explained that emergency services couldn’t help with homework. But Ryan immediately begged her not to hang up.
“My mom said 911 helps people,” he said. “Please help me with this.”
Something in his voice felt wrong.
The operator asked Ryan to hand the phone to his mother.
“No,” he whispered. “It’s only me. Mommy is lying on the kitchen floor, and she won’t wake up.”
Then he added something terrifying.
A strange man was still inside their house. He had warned Ryan not to call anyone, so the boy pretended he was asking for help with math in case the man overheard him.
The operator understood immediately.
She began asking Ryan simple “math questions” that secretly helped her learn his address, where he was hiding, and how many people were inside.
Ryan answered quietly from beneath his bed.
Within minutes, police surrounded the house. Officers arrested the intruder while paramedics rushed to Ryan’s mother, who had been attacked and left unconscious.
Thankfully, she survived.
Later, the operator met Ryan and told him how brave he had been.
Ryan simply replied, “Mom taught me that when I’m scared, I should call 911—even if I have to pretend.”
