My Stepmom Raised Me After My Dad Died When I Was 6 – Years Later, I Found the Letter He Wrote the Night Before His Death

I was 20 when I discovered my stepmom had been hiding the truth about my father’s death for 14 years.

All my life, she told me it was a random car accident. Nothing anyone could have prevented.

For the first four years of my life, it was just Dad and me. My biological mother died giving birth to me, and he raised me alone until he met Meredith. She was patient and kind, and eventually she adopted me. I started calling her Mom.

Two years later, she sat me down and told me Dad had died in a car accident. I was six. The funeral was a blur, and the story never changed: just a tragic accident.

But something always bothered me.

One day, while searching the attic for old photos, I found a hidden letter behind a picture of Dad holding me as a baby. My name was written on it.

The letter was dated the day before he died.

In it, Dad wrote about working too much and promised he would leave early the next day so we could make pancakes together like we used to.

That line shattered me.

Dad hadn’t just been “driving home.” He had rushed out early because he wanted to surprise me.

When I confronted Meredith, she admitted the truth. She hid the letter because she didn’t want me growing up believing my father died because of me.

Instead, she wanted me to know he died loving me.

And somehow, that changed everything.
