I Refuse to Stay Married After My In-Laws Humiliated Me at a Family Gathering

I (24F) recently attended my mother-in-law’s birthday party, determined to make it special. I spent six hours baking her cake from scratch, arrived early to help decorate, and after nearly 25 guests finished lunch, I stayed behind washing mountains of dishes while everyone relaxed outside. I thought I was being a supportive daughter-in-law… until everything changed in an instant.
My father-in-law suddenly pulled out his phone, snapped a picture of me at the sink, and laughed. Seconds later, everyone’s phones started buzzing. He had sent the photo to the family group chat with the caption: “Looks like she finally learned her place in the family.”
The room erupted in laughter. My face burned with embarrassment. I looked at my husband, waiting for him to defend me—but instead, he laughed too. That hurt more than anything.
I quietly dried my hands, grabbed my purse, and walked out while they were still joking. My husband came home furious, accusing me of “ruining the party” because I was “too sensitive” and couldn’t take a joke. But I told him humiliation isn’t humor, especially when the person who vowed to protect you joins in.
That night, I packed a bag and left. The next morning, I told him I refuse to stay married to someone who lets his family degrade me and then blames me for being hurt.
Now he’s begging for forgiveness, but some disrespect cuts too deep to repair.
