I Refuse To Spend My Savings To Rescue My Sister’s Children—My Money Is Not A Family Fund

I’m 35, childless, and have spent years saving for my dream home. My sister, 33, has four kids and has never saved money, living paycheck to paycheck with her husband.

Recently, she called me sobbing, saying her two-year-old twins were seriously ill and needed expensive emergency treatment. She begged me for financial help. I told her no—I explained that I had worked hard for my savings and that her children were not my responsibility.

She hung up crying.

The next morning, I woke up to chaos. My sister had posted a photo collage on Facebook showing me holding her twins as newborns beside a photo of my face crossed out in red with the words: “She chose money over their lives.”

She tagged family, posted it in group chats, and even sent it to some of my coworkers.

My phone exploded with calls and messages. My parents, cousins, even my grandmother reached out, calling me selfish and heartless. At work, people now stare at me differently.

My mom came over and begged me to reconsider, saying family should always come first.

I do feel awful for what those children are facing. But I can’t ignore that my sister and her husband never planned ahead and always assumed someone else would save them when things went wrong.

Now everyone treats me like a villain for saying no.

So tell me honestly—am I wrong for refusing to give up my future for responsibilities that were never mine?
