The DNA Test That Gave Me a Family I Never Knew

I always knew I was adopted. My parents told me I came from a family who already had children, living a few towns away. I was a “surprise,” and I never questioned it much.
Three years ago, my wife suggested we take a DNA test. I agreed, thinking it would be interesting—but nothing more.
When the results came back, everything changed.
I matched with a first cousin who had listed a public email. I reached out, we started comparing details… and suddenly, the truth unfolded.
I wasn’t born into a traditional family. My biological mother had been single. I wasn’t a late addition either—I had four sisters and one brother. I was the youngest, but only by a couple of years. Even more shocking? Most of them lived nearby.
And none of them knew I existed.
My biological mother had kept her pregnancy a secret from everyone. Before she passed away, she told just one of my sisters that she had given a baby up for adoption—but no one believed her.
Until me.
When I finally connected with them, that sister laughed and said, “I told you all! We have a baby brother!”
I sent in a DNA test out of curiosity.
I got a whole family back.
