I Asked My Stepdad Not to Attend My Wedding to Please My Dad

My stepdad Tim raised me from the age of eight, while my dad was often away. Despite that, my dad always resented Tim. Even my mom tried to ease the tension between them until she passed away last year.

When I got married, I asked my dad to walk me down the aisle. He agreed—and even offered to pay for everything—but with one condition: Tim couldn’t attend. I was torn. I had just lost my mom and didn’t want to lose my dad too, so I made the painful decision to ask Tim not to come. He quietly agreed.

On my wedding day, while my dad walked me down the aisle, Tim left the country. Days later, I found a letter from him—and it broke me.

He wrote about how much he loved me and my mom, and how he had always dreamed of being there for my wedding. Then he said something I’ll never forget: a real parent isn’t the one who provides money or appears occasionally, but the one who stays, supports, and heals you as you grow.

His final words were the hardest: he still loved me, but since I didn’t fight for him, maybe we shouldn’t be in each other’s lives anymore.

I feel like I’ve lost him—and I don’t know how to fix it.
