I Got Engaged to a ‘Perfect’ Woman – When I Met Her Parents for the First Time, I Canceled the Wedding

I thought I had met the perfect woman. Olivia was fun, supportive, and everything I wanted in a partner. After meeting at a concert, we quickly fell in love, moved in together, and got engaged less than a year later. I truly believed we were building a future together.
Everything changed when I finally met her parents.
During what was supposed to be a celebratory engagement dinner, her father explained that once we married, I would be expected to support Olivia financially so she could quit working. Then her parents casually added that I should also provide them with a monthly allowance and eventually purchase a larger home that included a dedicated bedroom for them.
At first, I thought they were joking.
They weren’t.
Even more surprising, Olivia fully agreed with their expectations. She insisted this arrangement was normal in her family and acted as though I should be honored to accept it.
As the evening continued, I realized they weren’t discussing a marriage built on partnership. They were discussing a financial plan, and I was expected to fund it.
On the drive home, I made the hardest decision of my life.
I ended the engagement.
Olivia accused me of overreacting and throwing away something special, but I knew I was doing the right thing. Months later, I learned her parents were more upset about losing their financial security than losing the relationship itself.
That experience taught me a valuable lesson: love should be built on respect and partnership, not obligations and expectations.
