A Late-Night Grocery Trip Turned Strange — Then I Learned the Real Reason the Cashier Ran After Me

At 2 a.m., I rushed to the grocery store hoping to grab a few essentials and get home quickly. The only people inside were the cashier and a man who kept giving me unsettling looks. I paid and hurried out, trying to ignore the uneasy feeling in my stomach.
A few minutes later, I heard footsteps behind me. When I turned around, it was the same man. “Why so fast, miss?” he called, making my heart race. I picked up my pace, but he kept following.
Then a loud scream broke the silence. I spun around to see the cashier sprinting toward us, waving his arms. For a split second, I thought things had gotten even worse.
Breathless, he shouted, “Miss, wait! You left your wallet!” Then he looked directly at the man and firmly said, “Sir, I told you not to leave the store. Police are on their way.”
The cashier quickly explained that the man wasn’t a customer but someone who often appeared late at night, behaving erratically and following people outside. Staff had been keeping an eye on him for weeks.
When officers arrived, they handled the situation calmly, connecting him with a local mental health support program rather than escalating it. Afterward, the cashier walked me safely home.
Before leaving, he simply smiled and said, “We try our best to keep everyone safe.” I never forgot that quiet act of kindness.
